Atlas’s hydroelectric energy solutions are evaluated based on feasibility and accessibility to natural resources. For example, hydropower often comes from a dam where reservoirs store river water. A reservoir can hold an enormous amount of water, like the Grand Coulee Dam, or a smaller amount of water, like the lower Snake and Columbia River dams. When released from the reservoir, water travels through and spins a turbine, triggering a generator that creates electricity. In this way, hydropower quickly converts kinetic energy from the movement of water into power.
